What SIGTERM, SIGKILL, and friends mean when you stop a process.

Common signals

SIGTERM (15)
Polite stop — prefer this first.
SIGINT (2)
Interrupt (Ctrl+C).
SIGHUP (1)
Hangup; many daemons reload config.
SIGKILL (9)
Force kill; process cannot catch it.
SIGSTOP / SIGCONT
Pause and resume.
